Law on the Succession of Ukraine

The Law on the Succession of Ukraine is an important legal document that helped Ukraine during a big change in its history. This happened after the fall of the Soviet Union. The law was created to guide Ukraine as it moved forward into becoming its own country.

The law was officially approved by the Verkhovna Rada, which is Ukraine’s Parliament, on September 12, 1991. It had nine main points to explain how Ukraine would handle its government and laws. The law started being used on October 5, 1991, and it helped Ukraine during a time of big changes.

Composition

This law explained the important rules for Ukraine after it became independent. It said that the highest power in Ukraine was the Verkhovna Rada, or Parliament of Ukraine. Until a new Constitution was created, the old laws from the time Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union would still be used, but only if they did not go against the new laws of Ukraine.

The law also talked about borders, saying that the borders from July 16, 1990, would be Ukraine’s borders. It mentioned that Ukraine would follow international treaties signed before it became independent, and it described how Ukraine would handle debts from the Soviet Union. Finally, it stated that anyone living in Ukraine when it became independent would be a citizen of Ukraine.
