Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Liechtenstein took part in the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016. This small country has been a regular participant in the Summer Olympic Games since its first appearance, missing only two editions. They did not send athletes to the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and joined the United States-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
For the 2016 Games, Liechtenstein sent two swimmers, Christoph Meier and Julia Hassler, along with tennis player Stephanie Vogt. Julia Hassler was an experienced competitor, having also swam in the 2012 Summer Olympics. She had the honor of carrying the nation's flag during the opening ceremony. Despite the strong efforts of its athletes, Liechtenstein has not yet won a medal at the Summer Olympics.
Background
Liechtenstein took part in seventeen Summer Olympic Games, starting from the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany, up to the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The most athletes from Liechtenstein competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, with twelve participants. No athlete from Liechtenstein has ever won a medal in the Summer Olympics, but they have won nine medals in the Winter Olympic Games. All athletes from Liechtenstein in the 2016 Summer Olympics competed because they were invited by FINA or the ITF. Hassler carried Liechtenstein's flag during the opening ceremony, and Meier did so during the closing ceremony.
