List of Niuean monarchs

This is a list of monarchs who have reigned over the beautiful Pacific island of Niue. Today, Niue is a self-governing territory that works closely with New Zealand, and it recognizes King Charles III as the head of state. However, before this, Niue had its own special group of leaders called kings.

Long ago, before around the year 1700, Niue did not have one leader for the whole island. Instead, different chiefs and family heads had power over their own groups of people. Around 1700, the idea of having a king started, probably because of contact with nearby islands like Samoa or Tonga. From that time, a series of leaders known as patu-iki ruled the island. The first of these kings was named Puni-mata.

These kings were not chosen because of their family alone. Instead, the people of Niue chose their leaders from families that were well-respected. This means that Niue had a system where people had a say in choosing their leader, making it a kind of democratic and elective monarchy, as described by Percy Smith in 1903.

Imperial rule and free association

From 1900 to 1901, Niue was ruled by the United Kingdom. In 1901, the island became part of New Zealand, which was acting for the British Empire. On 26 September 1907, New Zealand became a dominion, and from then on, the British monarch ruled Niue as the monarch of New Zealand. Elizabeth II was the first to be officially called Queen of New Zealand in 1952. Today, Niue is part of the Realm of New Zealand, which followed the dominion.
