List of cities and towns in Egypt
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Egypt is a country with a very long history, and many cities and towns have grown up over thousands of years. Today, Egypt has 249 cities in its 27 areas called governorates. Some cities are managed directly by the local governorate, while others are overseen by a special group called the New Urban Communities Authority. This group helps build new towns to give people more options for where to live, especially away from crowded areas near the Nile River and the Nile Delta.
Urban life in Egypt began a very long time ago, even before recorded history. Early villages formed near the Nile River, where people could grow food and live together. Over time, these villages grew into bigger towns and cities. They built temples, held markets, and traded goods. Some of these ancient cities are still around today. New cities continue to be built for many reasons, such as giving people places to live, supporting industry and trade, or protecting the country’s borders. The government can create new cities when it’s needed, following laws that consider the country’s economy and society.
