List of earthquakes in Chile

Chile lies in a region that moves a lot because of the fast-moving Nazca plate. This makes Chile experience many earthquakes. Since the year 1500, about one-third of the world's biggest earthquakes, those with a strength of M ≥ 8.5, happened in Chile.

Some places in Chile have felt big earthquakes more than once. For example, areas like Arica, Valparaíso, Concepción, and Valdivia have had major quakes happen in different years.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded in modern times happened in Chile in 1960. This was near the city of Valdivia and it was the most powerful earthquake ever measured.

Chile is located in an area with lots of movement under the ground, which causes earthquakes. Since the year 1500, many very big earthquakes have happened around the world, and about one-third of them occurred in Chile.
