List of earthquakes in Peru

A colorful map showing areas in Peru that are at risk for earthquakes, helping scientists understand where shaking might be stronger.

Earthquakes happen often in Peru because the country sits in an area where the Earth's plates meet. Near Peru's coast, two big pieces of the Earth's crust, called the Nazca and South American plates, push against each other. The South American plate moves slowly over the Nazca plate at about 77 mm (3 inches) each year.

These earthquakes happen when the plates slip and push past one another in a process called thrust faulting. This same movement helped create the tall Andes mountains and a deep ocean valley called the Peru–Chile Trench. It also causes some volcanoes to form in the high parts of Peru.

Geology of Peru

The oldest rocks in Peru are from a time called the Precambrian, more than two billion years old. Along the southern coast, some rocks show signs of ancient events that built mountains long ago.

In the Eastern Cordillera of Peru, very old rock formations were created in the Huanaco region. These include different types of rocks that formed after the first big mountain-building events.

The Grenville orogeny, an ancient event, greatly affected Peru. Important rocks in the Central Andean mountains, called the Arequipa Massif, formed around 1.9 billion years ago and have a special makeup that links them to rocks found in places like Labrador, Greenland, and Scotland. This suggests that part of western South America was once connected to what is now North America.

Earthquakes

Peru experiences many earthquakes because it sits near where two large pieces of Earth's surface, called tectonic plates, meet. These plates move slowly, which can cause the ground to shake.
