The Czech Republic is a parliamentary representative democracy in which the president is the head of state and the prime minister is the head of government. The president plays an important role in representing the country and making sure laws follow the constitution.

The first president of the Czech Republic was Václav Havel. He helped lead the country during a time of big change. The current president, Petr Pavel, was sworn into office on 9 March 2023.

Until 2012, presidents were chosen by members of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Since 2013, the people of the Czech Republic have voted directly to choose their president for a five-year term.
