List of schools in the Auckland Region
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Auckland region is the busiest part of New Zealand, home to the country's biggest city, Auckland, and many smaller towns like Wellsford, Warkworth, Helensville, the Hibiscus Coast, Pukekohe and Waiuku. It also includes beautiful islands in the Hauraki Gulf such as Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island. This area has many schools, with over 538 for primary and secondary education, teaching more than 267,000 students as of June 2011.
In New Zealand, children start school at age five in Year 1. They usually finish secondary school in Year 13, but they can stay until the end of the year they turn 19 if needed. Schools in Auckland are divided into different types: primary and intermediate schools for younger children, and secondary schools for older students. There are also special schools and schools for teen parents.
Most schools in Auckland are state schools, meaning they are paid for by the government and do not charge money for local students, though they might ask for a small donation. Some schools are state integrated schools, which have special traditions based on beliefs, and they may charge for building costs. Private schools charge fees for all their students. The number of students at each school changes often as children start school, move, or graduate. The information here comes from March 2026, and shows how many students each school has and what kinds of challenges they might face.
Primary and intermediate schools
Unless otherwise stated, all primary and intermediate schools in the Auckland region are coeducational.
The Waitematā local board is in the middle of Auckland. It includes the Auckland central business district and nearby areas such as Freemans Bay, Grey Lynn, Grafton, Herne Bay, Newmarket, Newton, Parnell, Ponsonby and Westmere.
The Maungakiekie–Tāmaki local board covers the south-eastern part of the Auckland isthmus. Big suburbs here include Glen Innes, Mount Wellington, Onehunga, Panmure, Penrose, Point England, and parts of Royal Oak.
