Map of Scotland showing some of the major towns and cities

This list shows towns and cities in Scotland with more than 15,000 people, ordered by how many people live there. The numbers come from the National Records of Scotland. Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland by population, while the capital, Edinburgh, is the second biggest by population but the largest by area. Other cities include Aberdeen, Dundee, and Stirling, which has the smallest city population at just over 37,000 people. Scotland has eight cities in total, with many larger towns, the biggest being Paisley.

The list also includes sections for “Localities,” which are basic places where people live, ordered by population, and “Settlements,” which are groups of urban areas that may include more than one locality and can stretch across different council areas. As of 2020, Scotland has 656 localities and 514 settlements.

Localities

In Scotland, a "locality" means a place with many houses close together, where at least 500 people live. There are 52 of these places with more than 15,000 people.

Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland. Greater Glasgow has about 1.5 million people.

Edinburgh, the capital city, is the second biggest.

Aberdeen is the third biggest and the largest city outside the main busy area called the Central Belt.

Dundee grew fast during the Industrial Revolution.

Paisley is the fifth biggest place in Scotland.

Dunfermline became a city in 2022.

Inverness is the largest city in the Scottish Highlands.

Perth is a city but was called a town for a while before becoming a city again in 2012.

Stirling used to be the capital and has the smallest number of people of all Scotland’s cities.

Kilmarnock is the biggest place south of the Central Belt.

Motherwell is a smaller place but helps make a bigger area in North Lanarkshire.

Kirkwall has about 10,000 people and is the biggest town in the Scottish islands.
