Antarctica is the southernmost continent on Earth. While Antarctica has never had a permanent human population, it has been explored by many groups over time. Because of this, many important places on and near the continent have been described and named.

This page brings together lists of notable places in and around the Antarctic continent. You will find geographic features like mountains and islands, bodies of water such as seas and lakes, and even the special human settlements that have been built for research. These lists help us understand and remember the many interesting spots that make up this icy world.

Bodies of water

Antarctic melt stream

Antarctica is a very dry place, like a desert, with almost no rain or snow each year. But when the ice on the continent melts, it creates small rivers and streams. You can see a list of these rivers at List of rivers of Antarctica.

Ice

Nearly all of Antarctica is covered by a thick layer of ice, about 1.9 kilometers deep on average. Because of this, many special ice features have been named on the continent.

Ice shelves

In many places, the ice from the land spreads out and forms huge floating ice shelves.

A list of Antarctic ice shelves can be found at List of Antarctic ice shelves.

Islands

Many islands are located around Antarctica. You can find a list of these islands in the article List of Antarctic and subantarctic islands.

Geographic features

Antarctica has many interesting mountains and hills. There are lists of mountains in different parts of Antarctica, such as Enderby Land, Wilkes Land, and Queen Maud Land. Some of these mountains include Alexander Peak, Haines Mountains, and Mount Arrowsmith.

Mount Erebus, the second-highest volcano in Antarctica

Antarctica also has several volcanoes, both active and extinct. You can find a list of these volcanoes in a special list.

Human settlements

Antarctica has very few places where people live all the time, with just two civilian bases. Most places there are not permanent and include lighthouses and research stations.

Esperanza Base is a permanent base where civilians live.

Villa Las Estrellas is another permanent base where civilians live, and it is also a village.
