MTU Aero Engines AG is a German company that makes engines for airplanes. They design, build, and help fix engines used in both military and civilian airplanes. This company is very important because airplane engines need to be strong and safe to keep everyone flying comfortably and securely.

Before it was called MTU Aero Engines, the company was known as MTU München. Over the years, it has grown to become a key player in making the engines that help airplanes take off, fly, and land safely. Their work touches many parts of the aviation world, from commercial flights to important military missions.

History

The modern company MTU Aero Engines began in 1934, when a part of BMW called BMW Flugmotorenbau GmbH was created. This happened because the German government wanted to hide its plans to build up its air force, the Luftwaffe. In 1936, BMW built a factory in Allach, near Munich, which is now the headquarters of MTU Aero Engines. By 1940, this factory was making many engines for fighter planes and bombers.

After World War II ended in 1945, American soldiers took over the factory. For ten years, no airplane engines were made there. Instead, the factory fixed vehicles and artillery for the U.S. Army.

In 1954, BMW started developing airplane engines again. By 1959, they were making engines under license from American companies for the German Air Force’s Lockheed F-104 Starfighter planes.

In 1960, a company called MAN AG bought half of BMW’s engine business. In 1965, MAN bought the rest and merged it with another company to form MAN Turbo. In 1969, MAN Turbo joined with Daimler-Benz to create MTU, focusing on airplane engines.

In 1985, Daimler-Benz took full control of MTU. In 1986, a new group called EuroJet Turbo GmbH was formed to make engines for the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet.

In 2000, MTU became part of a bigger company called EADS. Later, it was sold to a private equity firm and then went public in 2005.

In 2019, MTU planned to open a new repair center in Serbia. MTU has facilities all over the world, including in Rocky Hill, Connecticut; Vancouver, British Columbia; Rzeszów, Poland; Zhu Hai, China; and Dallas, Texas.

In 2021, MTU’s maintenance facility in Canada moved into a bigger building to make more space for future work.
