Magnolia is a large group of about 210 to 340 types of flowering plants. These plants grow naturally in parts of Asia, South America, Central America, the West Indies, and eastern North America. Magnolias can be trees or shrubs, and they are famous for their big, sweet-smelling flowers that bloom in many shapes. These flowers have many parts arranged in a spiral and produce cone-like fruits in autumn that open to show their seeds.

The name Magnolia was first used in 1703 to honor a French botanist named Pierre Magnol. Scientists have studied these plants for a long time and sometimes debate how to group them. Magnolias are very old plants, dating back to a time when dinosaurs lived. They are important in gardens because of their beautiful flowers, and people also use them in cooking, medicine, and for making wood.

Magnolias are special symbols in many places, like cities such as Shanghai, Seoul, and U.S. states like Mississippi and Louisiana. They appear in stories, movies, and songs, standing for beauty and strength.

Description

An anatomical diagram of the flower of Magnolia biondii

Magnolias are spreading evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs known for their large, fragrant flowers. These flowers can be bowl-shaped or star-shaped and come in colors like white, pink, purple, green, or yellow. In deciduous species, the flowers often bloom before the leaves appear in spring. They produce cone-like fruits in the autumn.

Like all Magnoliaceae, magnolias have flowers with many layers of petals and many parts arranged in a spiral pattern. The fruits open to release their seeds.

Taxonomy

The name Magnolia was first used in 1703 by French botanist Charles Plumier for a flowering tree from Martinique. It was named to honor another French botanist, Pierre Magnol. Later botanists began naming and describing Magnolia species from China and Japan.

Magnolia grandiflora

By the end of the 18th century, many Magnolia species from Asia were identified. As more species were discovered, scientists grouped them into different categories. Recent studies using DNA have helped scientists understand how these plants are related.

In 2014, two new Magnolia species, Magnolia vargasiana and Magnolia llangantensis, were discovered in Ecuador. These trees grow tall, with creamy white flowers, and are found in a protected area. However, because they grow in only one place and in small numbers, they are at risk of disappearing.

Uses

Magnolias are popular plants for gardens because of their beautiful flowers. Some bloom early in spring, even before their leaves appear. Others bloom later in spring or early summer. These flowers often look like tulips, which is why some magnolias are called "tulip trees."

People also use magnolia flowers for food. In some places, the petals are pickled to add flavor to dishes. In Asia, the flower buds are used to flavor rice and tea. In Japan, young leaves and flower buds are cooked and eaten as a vegetable. Older leaves can be dried and used as seasoning.

Magnolias have also been used in traditional medicine. For example, in China, the bark and flower buds of one type of magnolia have been used for a long time.

The wood of some magnolia trees, like the cucumbertree magnolia, is strong and used for building. It is often sold as "yellow poplar."

Symbols

White or Yulan magnolia is the official flower of Shanghai. Magnolia grandiflora is the state flower of both Mississippi and Louisiana. The flower is so common in Mississippi that it is called the "Magnolia State". The magnolia is also the state tree of Mississippi. Magnolias have long been linked with the Southern United States. Magnolia sieboldii is the national flower of North Korea and the Gangnam District of Seoul.

Arts

The 1989 movie Steel Magnolias is based on a play by Robert Harling. It tells the story of a group of women from Louisiana, showing their strong bonds. The name 'magnolia' comes from a magnolia tree they talk about at the start. In a famous 1939 song called "Strange Fruit", written by Abel Meeropol, the magnolia flower is used to represent the beauty of the South, but also its sad history.
