Maine Highlands

The Maine Highlands is a name used by the tourism industry in Maine to describe a large central part of the state. This area includes the counties of Piscataquis and Penobscot. The name Maine Highlands was chosen in the late 1990s to better attract visitors to the region.

In the past, from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the term "Maine Highlands" described a part of the Appalachian Mountain range in Maine. During the late 1700s and early 1800s, this area was part of a border dispute between the United States and Canada. Because the border was not clearly marked, it led to what is called the Aroostook War, which was the only time a U.S. state declared war on another country.

Today, the Maine Highlands are part of the New England-Acadian forests ecoregion. There are four border crossing stations in the area that connect to the Canada–United States border.
