Maldives at the 1992 Summer Olympics

The Maldives took part in the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain, from July 25 to August 9, 1992. This was the second time the Maldives joined the Olympic Games, after first appearing at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

Seven athletes from the Maldives competed in two sports. In track and field, they were Ahmed Shageef, Mohamed Amir, Hussain Riyaz, Hussein Haleem, and Aminath Rishtha. In swimming, Ahmed Imthiyaz and Mohamed Rasheed took part.

Unfortunately, none of the athletes moved past the first round in their events. So far, no athlete from the Maldives has ever won an Olympic medal.

Background

The Maldives is an island country in the Indian Ocean, located in Southern Asia. It became independent from the United Kingdom in 1965. The Maldives Olympic Committee was formed in 1985 and joined the International Olympic Committee that same year. The Maldives first joined the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988 and has been part of every Summer Olympics since then.

The 1992 Summer Olympics took place in Barcelona, Spain, from July 25 to August 9, 1992. The Maldives sent seven athletes to these games. The Maldives sent five athletes to compete in athletics at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Four were men, and one was a woman. This was the first time the Maldives sent a female athlete to the Olympics. The athletes were Ahmed Shageef, Mohamed Amir, Hussain Riyaz, Hussein Haleem, and Aminath Rishtha.

Ahmed Shageef took part in two races, the men's 100 metres and the men's 200 metres. In both races, he did not move past the first round. Mohamed Amir ran in the men's 400 metres but also did not advance. Hussain Riyaz ran in the men's 800 metres and did not move forward either. Hussein Haleem ran in the men's marathon and finished near the end of the group. Aminath Rishtha was the only woman from the Maldives at the games, and she ran in the women's 100 metres but did not advance to the next round.

The Maldives had two male swimmers at the 1992 games. Ahmed Imthiyaz and Mohamed Rasheed both competed in the men's 50 metre freestyle and men's 100 metre freestyle. In the 50 metre freestyle, they placed last in their heat and were the last two finishers out of 72 swimmers. In the 100 metre freestyle, they also finished last in their heat and were the last two finishers out of 75 swimmers.
