Marineland of Florida
Adapted from Wikipedia Β· Discoverer experience
Marineland of Florida, often just called Marineland, was one of Florida's first marine mammal parks. It is known as "the world's first oceanarium." People could visit Marineland to see and even swim with dolphins, an activity that made it very special. After closing for a while, it reopened to the public on March 4, 2006, and charged visitors the same price as in 1938βone dollar. In 2011, the Georgia Aquarium bought Marineland for $9.1 million. Today, it remains a popular place for families and visitors to learn about and enjoy marine life.
History
Marineland was first created by W. Douglas Burden, Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, Sherman Pratt, and Ilya Andreyevich Tolstoy as an oceanarium for filming marine life. It opened in 1938 with a main attraction of a bottlenose dolphin. Over the years, it grew to include many facilities like a motel, restaurant, snack bars, a marina, and gift shops.
The park had two large tanks called oceanariums. The circular one held dolphins and some fish, while the rectangular one held many types of fish, sharks, and eels. Visitors could walk around and look through portholes to see the animals. In 1952, a stadium was added where dolphins, called porpoises at the time, performed shows. The park also had other exhibits like penguins and an electric eel show.
Marineland faced challenges over the years. After Walt Disney World and SeaWorld opened, visits dropped. Ownership changed several times, and the park fell into disrepair. Hurricanes caused more damage, and the old buildings were torn down. In 2006, it reopened as a place where visitors could interact with dolphins and learn about marine life. Today, Marineland continues to focus on conservation and education, offering programs for children and adults to learn about the ocean and its creatures.
Dolphins
Marineland Dolphin Adventure is home to some of the oldest dolphins in care. These include Betty III, born in 1967, and others like Lightning, Sunny, and Shaka. The park also cares for Comet, a rescued dolphin estimated to have been born in early 2005.
