Marl

Marl is an earthy material made from carbonate minerals, clays, and silt. When it hardens, it turns into a rock called marlstone. Marl forms in places where there is water, like the sea or lakes, often because of tiny plants called algae.

You can find marl in famous places, like the lower part of the cliffs of Dover and under the Channel Tunnel that connects France and the United Kingdom. It is also common in lakes left after glaciers, such as in parts of the northeastern United States and the Canadian Rockies.

People have used marl to help soil grow better, especially when the soil is too acidic, and it is also used to make cement.

Marl is a type of mud that is rich in minerals, especially carbonates, along with clays and silt. When this mud hardens, it becomes a rock called marlstone. Marl forms in places where water is, like oceans or lakes, often because of tiny plants called algae.

Marlstone is a hard rock that looks like marl but is more solid. It breaks in big pieces rather than into thin layers. The main mineral in marl is calcite, but it can also contain other minerals. Some marl has a green color because of a special clay called glauconite, which is common in ocean sediments.

Occurrences

The lower layers of the chalk cliffs at Dover are made of marl mixed with limestone. These layers are common in rocks from the time of the dinosaurs in northwestern Europe. The Channel Tunnel runs through these marl layers between France and the United Kingdom.

Marl can also be found in old lake sediments. A type of green algae called Chara grows in shallow, chalky lakes. When this algae dies, it breaks down into tiny pieces that mix with silt and clay to form marl. In some places in the northeastern United States, marl ponds are poor in nutrients, so normal pond life cannot survive there.

In Hungary, there is a special type of marl called Buda Marl that formed long ago during the Upper Eocene era. It sits between layers of rock and soil.

Marl is also the main rock type in the Vaca Muerta Formation in Argentina.

Economic geology

Marl has been used to help soil grow better and to balance soil that is too acidic. It is also used to make a special kind of building material called Portland cement. Because some marl does not let water pass through easily, it was used to build the Channel Tunnel between England and France and is being studied for storing nuclear waste safely.

Marl has been used in farming for a very long time. It adds helpful minerals to the soil and makes the soil healthier. Farmers in Britain started using it thousands of years ago, and it became more common during the 1500s. Over time, other materials like lime became more popular, but marl is still used today, although not as much as before. In the United States, marl was especially important in areas where the soil lacked nutrients.

Marl is also used in making modern building materials and in special projects like the Channel Tunnel, where its ability to block water was very useful. Scientists are looking at marl for safely storing nuclear waste because it does not let water pass through easily.

Marl lakes

A marl lake is a special kind of lake where the bottom has lots of marl, a mix of minerals and tiny particles. These lakes are often found in places that were recently covered by ice and have water that is rich in certain minerals.

People sometimes take marl from these lakes to make building materials, but marl lakes are very important for nature. They can be harmed by things like dirt getting into the water, too many nutrients, draining the water, and animals that do not belong there. In Britain, only the marl lakes in far northern Scotland might stay natural in the future.
