Marte Olsbu Røiseland (born 7 December 1990) was a talented Norwegian biathlete. She competed in three Winter Olympics and won three gold medals, along with two silver and two bronze medals. Marte also did very well at world championships, earning two gold medals and helping her team win eleven relay races. In 2022, she achieved a major honor by winning the overall Biathlon World Cup. Her achievements have made her one of Norway’s most celebrated winter sports athletes.
Personal life
Marte Olsbu Røiseland was born on 7 December 1990. She is married to Sverre Olsbu Røiseland, and they have a son named Tobias, who was born on 19 November 2023. She lives in Froland, Norway.
Career
Marte Olsbu Røiseland has been competing in the Biathlon World Cup since the 2012–13 season and has represented Norway at several Biathlon World Championships. During the Biathlon World Championships 2016 in Oslo, she won a bronze medal in the mixed relay and helped Norway win gold in the relay. At the Biathlon World Championships 2020 in Antholz, she became the first biathlete to win seven medals at a World Championship.
At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, she won two silver medals in the 7.5 kilometres sprint and the mixed relay. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, she won three gold and two bronze medals, matching a record held by another great Norwegian biathlete, Ole Einar Bjørndalen. In the 2021–22 season, she won the World Cup overall title and also won titles in sprint and pursuit. She announced her retirement from biathlon after the 2022–23 season.
Awards
Marte Olsbu Røiseland received the L'Équipe Champion of Champions award in 2020, becoming the first biathlete and the first Norwegian athlete to achieve this honor.
She also earned the Holmenkollen Medal and the Fearnley award in 2022, as well as being named Biathlete of the Year for that year by Forum Nordicum, a group of journalists who cover winter sports.
