Massoia's lutrine opossum (Lutreolina massoia) is a special kind of opossum that lives in South America. This small, unique animal is part of a group of marsupials, which means it carries its babies in a pouch, just like some other opossums.

This species is interesting because it looks different from other opossums. It has a soft, fur-like coat that helps it stay warm in cooler areas. Massoia's lutrine opossum is mainly found in places with forests and bushes, where it can hide and find food.

Scientists and nature lovers study this opossum to learn more about how animals adapt to their environments and to help protect them. Because some of their habitats are changing, understanding and caring for Massoia's lutrine opossum is very important for keeping nature balanced.

Taxonomy

This animal was once thought to be part of another opossum group called the big lutrine opossum. But in 2014, scientists learned it was its own special species.

The name honors Elio Massoia, an Argentine scientist who helped discover more about South American animals. He was one of the first to see that these opossums were different from others in the Yungas area.

Distribution

The Massoia's lutrine opossum lives in parts of south-central Bolivia and extends its range down to northern Argentina. In Argentina, it is mainly found in the Yungas region, which is east of the Andes mountains. Unlike a related species, this opossum prefers lowland savanna grasslands with lots of dense plants and areas near water.

Description

Lutreolina massoia, also known as Massoia's lutrine opossum, is a small opossum from South America. It is smaller than another similar opossum called Lutreolina crassicaudata. The two species look different in the size and shape of their skulls and in their teeth.
