History

The name Middleton comes from old English and means "middle farm" or "middle settlement." Tyas is a family name from Norman times, but we don't know if the village ever actually belonged to that family.

The village sits on rock made of limestone, which people have dug up for many years. You can still see limestone being dug up close to the village today. Long ago, there was also a place where people dug for copper not far away.

Just outside the village is a big area called Middleton Lodge Estate. The main house, Middleton Lodge, was built in 1760 and is very special, so it is protected as a listed building. There are also many other important older buildings and a large park nearby.
