Military Service Act 1916
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Military Service Act 1916 was a law made by the Parliament of the United Kingdom during the First World War. This law required men to join the army to fight in the war. It was passed to make sure there were enough soldiers to help Britain win the war.
This law applied only in Great Britain and not in Ireland or other parts of the British Empire at the time. For a similar law made the next year in Canada, you can read about the Military Service Act, 1917. This act changed many lives, as men who had not chosen to join the army now had to serve their country.
The act
The bill that became this act was introduced by the Prime Minister in January 1916. It received approval on 27 January and started on 2 March 1916. Before this, people could choose to join the army, but now the government required men to serve.
The act said that men aged 18 to 41 could be called to join the army, unless they had certain reasons to be excused, like being married with children, working in important jobs, or having strong beliefs against fighting. Later changes expanded these rules to include more men and ages. Those who disagreed could ask special boards for an exemption, and there was a way to appeal their decision.
Ireland
The Military Service Act of 1916 only applied to men living in Great Britain, not in Ireland, which was part of the United Kingdom at the time.
Later, in 1918, there was a big problem when the British Government tried to make people in Ireland join the military too. This led to what is called the Conscription Crisis of 1918. During this time, many people in Ireland opposed this idea, and a group called Sinn Féin was seen as leading this opposition. When the leader of Ireland at the time, Lord French, accused Sinn Féin of working with other countries against the government, he had many of their leaders arrested. This actually made more people support Sinn Féin.
Subsequent developments
The Military Service Act 1916 was later removed by a law called the Statute Law Revision Act 1927. This act updated and cleaned up older laws that were no longer needed.
