The Monte Carlo Casino, officially named Casino de Monte-Carlo, is a famous place for games and fun in Monaco. It is more than just a casino; it also has a beautiful theater called the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and offices for a dance group known as Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.

This special place is owned and run by a company called the Société des Bains de Mer. The government of Monaco and the royal family have most of the shares in this company. They also own many hotels, sports clubs, restaurants, and night clubs in the country.

One interesting rule is that people who live in Monaco, called Monégasques, are not allowed to gamble or work in the casino’s gaming rooms. This rule was created a long time ago by Princess Caroline, who was in charge of Monaco at the time. She changed the rules because she thought it wasn’t right for locals to gamble or work there.

History

The idea of opening a gambling casino in Monaco began with Princess Caroline, who wanted to help her family's money problems. Her son, future Prince Charles, worked with others to create plans for a spa, a casino, and homes for visitors. The first casino opened in 1856 in a small building.

Over time, the casino moved and grew. In 1863, a man named François Blanc took over and helped build a bigger, more beautiful casino. The area was renamed Monte Carlo in honor of the prince. The casino was expanded many times, becoming a famous place to visit. It helped support Monaco's economy for many years.

Facilities

The Monte Carlo Casino has two main buildings. The main casino, called Casino de Monte-Carlo, offers special rooms with different rules and dress codes. The other building, Casino Café de Paris, has simpler games with lower prices. Games in the regular rooms are open from 2:00 PM to 1:00 AM every day, and the rules get stricter after 7:00 PM.

You can play many games here, such as different kinds of roulette, Texas Hold'em poker, Blackjack, Trente et Quarante, Craps, Baccarat, Video poker, and Slot machines.

1913 gambler's fallacy

In the summer of 1913, something very unusual happened at the Casino de Monte-Carlo. During a game of roulette, the ball landed on the color black 26 times in a row. This was extremely rare. Many people lost a lot of money because they thought that after so many black numbers, the wheel must start showing red soon. They were wrong, as each spin of the wheel is independent and random.

Breaking the bank

In 1873, a man named Joseph Jagger brought attention to the Monte Carlo Casino by finding a problem with one of the roulette wheels and using it to his advantage. This event was later popularized in a song called "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" from 1892.

Later, a group of players from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology tried a similar strategy using a special team method. Their story was told in a book called Busting Vegas.

Other mentions

Some computer methods used to solve tough math problems are called Monte Carlo methods because they were named after the Casino de Monte-Carlo by a scientist named Nicholas Metropolis. There is also a special math tool called CASINO, and a part of the race track used in the Monaco Grand Prix is named Casino, which is part of the Circuit de Monaco.
