A mouse (pl. mice) is a small rodent. Characteristically, mice are known to have a pointed snout, small rounded ears, a body-length scaly tail, and a high breeding rate. The best known mouse species is the common house mouse (Mus musculus). Mice are also popular as pets. In some places, certain kinds of field mice are locally common. They are known to invade homes for food and shelter.

Mice are typically distinguished from rats by their size. Generally, when a muroid rodent is discovered, its common name includes the term mouse if it is smaller, or rat if it is larger. The common terms rat and mouse are not taxonomically specific. Typical mice are classified in the genus Mus, but the term mouse is not confined to members of Mus and can also apply to species from other genera such as the deer mouse (Peromyscus).

House mouse (Mus musculus)

Domestic mice sold as pets often differ substantially in size from the common house mouse. This is attributable to breeding and different conditions in the wild. The best-known strain of mouse is the white lab mouse. It has more uniform traits, which makes these mice more useful in research.

Cats, wild dogs, foxes, birds of prey, snakes, some large lizards, and certain kinds of arthropods have been known to prey upon mice. Despite this, mice populations remain plentiful. Due to its remarkable adaptability to almost any environment, the mouse is one of the most successful mammalian genera living on Earth today.

Types of animals known as mice

Mice are small animals that belong to a group called murines, which also includes common rats. They are part of a larger family called murids, along with gerbils and other similar animals.

There are many different kinds of mice found in nature. Some live in forests, while others live in fields or even homes. They are part of the order Rodentia, which includes many other rodents. Some examples of mice include the Brush mouse, Florida mouse, Golden mouse, and the Wood mouse. Each type of mouse has its own special features and habitats.

Emotions

Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology discovered that mice can show different feelings, just like humans. They used special computer programs to see if mice looked happy, uncomfortable, sick, hurt, or scared. This helps us understand more about how animals feel.

Diet

Mice naturally eat fruits and grains from plants, but they can adapt to eating many kinds of food scraps when they live near people. When kept as pets, mice are usually given special food pellets that give them all the nutrients they need, along with plenty of vegetables.

Contrary to what many people think, mice do not especially like cheese. Instead, they prefer sweet foods and foods with lots of calories. They might eat cheese only if there is nothing else available.

Mice are often used in laboratory research because they are similar to humans in many ways. Scientists study mice to learn about biology and health. They are easy to care for, reproduce quickly, and are less expensive than other animals.

Many people also keep mice as pets. They can be playful and enjoy being handled. Pet mice need a safe cage, special food, and clean bedding to stay healthy. Mice are also used as food for small pets like snakes, lizards, and birds. In some places, people eat mice too, especially in parts of Africa and Asia.
