Mugharet el-Zuttiyeh, which means "Cave of the Robbers" but is also called the "Skull Cave," is an important old place where people lived a very long time ago. It is found in Upper Galilee in Israel, not far from a place called Nahal Amud. The cave is a little bit higher than the valley around it.
Inside this cave, scientists found something very special โ a very old skull from a person who lived long ago. This skull is known as the "Galilee skull" or "The Yabrudian Man." Finding such old remains helps us learn about the people who lived in this area thousands of years before today.
History
Discovered in 1925, the skull from Mugharet el-Zuttiyeh was the first fossilised archaic human found in Western Asia. It was found together with remains at Es Skhul and the Wadi el-Mughara Caves. Scientists later classified this skull as belonging to Homo heidelbergensis.
The cave was excavated in 1925 to 1926 by Francis Turville-Petre, marking the first paleontological excavation in the area. He discovered a skull known as the Galilee Skull, which was first thought to be similar to a Neanderthal. The skull is now kept in the Rockefeller Museum in East Jerusalem, with a copy displayed at the Israel Museum.
