Mycelium is a root-like part of a fungus made of many tiny, branching threads called hyphae. These threads grow in soil and other places, forming a network that can be very small or cover huge areas.

Fungi use their mycelium to get food. The hyphae release special substances that break down materials into smaller pieces, which the fungus then absorbs.

Mycelium is very important for nature. It helps break down dead plants, enriching the soil and releasing carbon dioxide into the air.
