NGC 2903
Adapted from Wikipedia ยท Discoverer experience
NGC 2903 is a beautiful barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Leo. It was discovered by the astronomer William Herschel on November 16, 1784. At first, people thought it was a double nebula, but later it was identified as a spiral galaxy.
This galaxy is about 30 million light-years away from our Milky Way and is part of the Virgo Supercluster. It has a barred structure with spiral arms that are not too tightly wound. Most of its stars are found in the outer parts, with a smaller number in the central area.
In the center of NGC 2903, there is a very active area where new stars are forming quickly. This activity is fueled by gas moving along the bar of the galaxy. Nearby, there is a small irregular galaxy called KKH 51 that seems to travel along with NGC 2903.
