Nassau, Bahamas
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Nassau is the capital and largest city of The Bahamas. It is located on the island of New Providence, which is home to most of the country's people. As the main city, Nassau is important for business, schools, government, and news in The Bahamas.
The major airport for the country, Lynden Pindling International Airport, is near Nassau. It offers daily flights to many big cities in Canada, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Nassau is also where the country's government meets and where important courts are located. Long ago, Nassau was known as a place where pirates were active. The city was named after William III of England, Prince of Orange-Nassau.
Nassau began to grow in the late 1700s when many Loyalists and their enslaved people moved there after the American War of Independence. These new settlers became a big part of the city's population. Over time, the city spread across the whole island. Before the mid-1900s, many areas outside the city were mostly empty land. The Loyalists created farms in places like Clifton and Tusculum and used enslaved people to work there.
When the British stopped the slave trade in 1807, they brought many freed Africans to live on New Providence, including places like Adelaide Village and Gambier Village. Some enslaved people from American ships, like the Creole, were also allowed to settle there after being freed. Most of the African descendants lived in areas called Grants Town and Bain Town, south of Nassau, while many people of European background lived along the northern coast of the island.
History
The city of Nassau was founded in 1670 by British settlers who named it Charles Town after England’s King Charles II. It was used as a base during wars with nearby Spain. In 1684, it was burned down but rebuilt and renamed Nassau in honor of King William III.
In the early 1700s, Nassau became a place where pirates gathered. The British sent a new leader to restore order, and by 1718, the town was brought back under control. Over time, Nassau grew and became an important place for trade and later, a popular tourist spot.
Geography
Nassau is located on New Providence Island. The city has a beautiful harbour with old and colonial-style buildings and a busy port. Because of its tropical climate and natural beauty, Nassau is a popular place for tourists to visit.
Nassau grew right behind the port area. The island of New Providence has a lot of flat land with some low hills. In the middle of the island, there are a few shallow lakes connected to the tides.
Nassau is close to the United States, just 290 kilometres or 180 miles from Miami, Florida. This closeness made it a favourite holiday spot, especially after travel to Cuba was not allowed in 1963. The Atlantis resort on nearby Paradise Island brings in many visitors and is the biggest employer in the area besides the government.
Climate
Nassau has a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen: Am), which means it has hot, wet summers and mild, dry winters. Temperatures stay fairly the same all year. From May to October, daytime temperatures usually range from 86–90 °F (30–32 °C). From November to April, they are between 77 and 81 °F (25 and 27 °C), and rarely drop below 59 °F (15 °C).
Urban development
In the 1800s, Nassau started to grow as people from the countryside moved there. Since the 1950s, the city has expanded outward. The centre of Nassau in 1788 was just a few blocks between Government House and the harbour. Over time, the city grew east to Malcolm’s Park, south to Wulff Road, and west to Nassau Street. Areas like Grants Town and Bain Town became home to many people.
People of European descent built homes along the shore, stretching east to Fort Montagu and west to Saunders Beach. In the 1900s, the city continued to grow east to Village Road and west to Fort Charlotte. After World War II, development continued to spread.
In recent years, new neighbourhoods for middle-income families have been built. The government also created affordable housing areas in places like Yellow Elder and Pinewood Gardens.
City centre
The city centre is the busiest part of Nassau. Many people come here every day to shop, eat, see sights, and enjoy the nice weather. The main area is around Bay Street and Woodes Rogers Walk, close to the port. This area stretches several blocks in every direction, starting near West Bay and the Junkanoo Beach.
Moving along Bay Street, you’ll find the British Colonial Hotel, followed by the Pirates of Nassau Museum near the British Colonial Hilton. The street is filled with shops, a few restaurants, and clubs. Important landmarks nearby include Vendue House, Christ Church Cathedral, and the Nassau Public Library. After a few blocks, the tourist shops end, but local shops continue along Bay Street until it becomes East Bay.
The Straw Market is a popular spot in the city centre. A new market opened in 2011 after the old one was destroyed by a fire in 2001. The market has many stores selling handmade crafts from the Bahamas.
Cable Beach

Cable Beach is where most of Nassau’s hotels are located. Five hotels line this area, two of which are all-inclusive. The area is also known for its restaurants, mostly found in the hotels or nearby. There is some shopping, especially at Wyndham and Baha Mar. In 2017, the Baha Mar resort opened, adding over 2,000 hotel rooms and the largest gaming and convention centre in the Caribbean to this part of New Providence Island.
