The National Assembly of Laos, also called the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is the main governing body in Laos. It is the highest power in the country and all other government parts follow its rules. The National Assembly meets in the capital city, Vientiane.
Laos is a one-party state, meaning only one group, the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, is allowed to lead the country. Because of this, the National Assembly usually supports the party's choices.
There have been efforts to help the members of the National Assembly improve their skills in making laws, watching over the government, and representing the people.
History
The National Assembly was created by the Lao Constitution in 1991.
Elections took place in 2021. The Lao People's Revolutionary Party won 158 seats in the bigger National Assembly, which has 164 members total. The other 6 seats went to independent members.
In 2017, building began on a new National Assembly building, given as a gift by Vietnam. The building was finished in 2021.
Committees
The National Assembly has several groups called parliamentary committees that help it do its work. These include the Law Committee, the Economic, Technology and Environment Committee, the Planning, Finance and Audit Committee, the Cultural and Social Committee, the Ethnic Affairs Committee, the National Defence and Security Committee, and the Foreign Affairs Committee.
