National Museum of Ancient Art

The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (also called the National Museum of Ancient Art) is a famous art museum in Lisbon. It has more than 40,000 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, gold objects, furniture, textiles, ceramics, and prints. Many people visit this museum every year to see its beautiful collections.

The museum was started in 1884 to show off artworks that once belonged to the Portuguese royal family and the National Academy of Fine Arts. It is located in a grand old building called the Palácio Alvor-Pombal, which used to be a home for an important leader named the 1st Marquis of Pombal. The museum’s pieces come from many parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Some of the most famous artists whose works are in the museum are Hieronymus Bosch, Raphael, Hans Holbein the Elder, Francisco de Zurbarán, Albrecht Dürer, Domingos Sequeira, and Giambattista Tiepolo. The museum helps everyone learn about art from long ago and enjoy its beauty.

History

The National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon began with the closing of religious orders and monasteries in Portugal in 1833. This brought many beautiful religious artworks into public view. In 1836, an art school called the Academy of Fine Arts was created and set up in a former monastery. It started a small art gallery to show some of these pieces.

Over time, more art collections were added, including paintings from a former queen. In 1884, the government bought a beautiful old palace called Janelas Verdes to create a new museum. This became the National Museum of Ancient Art.

After Portugal changed its government in 1910, the museum became independent from the art school. The museum’s first director worked hard to organize the collection and focus on paintings. One of its most famous pieces is the Saint Vincent Panels, a large artwork from the 1400s. In 1940, the museum added an old convent next door to show more exhibits.

There are also many old fabrics and tapestries from places like France, Egypt, Portugal, India, and Italy. Some of these textiles are very old, from the 5th century.

The museum has a big group of art from places Portugal explored long ago, like America, Asia, and Africa. There are screens, boxes, and statues from these places.

Furniture

The furniture collection includes pieces from France, Italy, Portugal, and places Portugal once ruled. There are tables, chairs, and even special boxes from different times.

Ceramics

The museum also has many old pots and dishes from Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, and China. Some of these are from the 1700s and show beautiful designs.
