Neuburg an der Donau is a town in the state of Bavaria in Germany. It is the capital of the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district and has a history that is over 1,200 years old. The town's name means "New Castle on the Danube," referring to its location near the Danube River.

History

Neuburg has been a place where people lived since the Bronze Age. Old items have been found on the hill where a big palace stands today.

A long time ago, Romans had a settlement on a high hill looking over the Danube River. This was part of a border wall that kept the Roman Empire safe.

A huge castle called Neuburg Castle was built a very long time ago by a group of people called the Aiglolfings. Later, in 1527, a family named the Wittelsbach changed the castle into a beautiful palace that we can still see today.

During a big war called the Thirty Years' War, soldiers from Sweden took over the town for a little while. In 1800, French soldiers won a battle near Neuburg against Austrian soldiers.

During World War II, the town was bombed, and later in 1945, soldiers from the United States helped free the town from Nazi control.

Hofkirche

Neuburg an der Donau has a defensive wall around the old town. Inside the old town, you can find interesting places like the 'Birdland Jazz Club Neuburg', which is a great spot for jazz music.

The Renaissance Ducal Palace was built between 1530 and 1545. Today, it holds several museums, including a gallery of art and an archaeology museum. Other important sights are the Hofkirche church, the Town Hall, a beautiful library from the 1700s, and two churches from different time periods. There is also a hunting lodge called Grünau, built a bit further east.

Neuburg an der Donau has been home to many important people throughout history. Some of these include Philip William, who was an Elector Palatine from 1653 to 1690, and Francis Louis, who became a Prince-Bishop. Other notable individuals include Eduard von Lutz, a Bavarian Major General, and Heinrich Schlier, a theologian who worked with both the Evangelical and Catholic Churches. More recently, Günter Hirsch served as President of the Federal Supreme Court, and Bernd Eichinger was a well-known film producer and director. The town has also seen notable athletes like middle-distance runner Hans-Peter Ferner and journalists such as Doris Schröder-Köpf.
