Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, the band became very popular in the 1990s. They are known for helping to make alternative rock popular and were often seen as representing Generation X.
The band started in the Seattle grunge scene and released their first album, Bleach, in 1989. Their big break came with the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their second album, Nevermind, released in 1991. This album was very successful and helped end the popularity of hair metal.
Nirvana mixed punk style with pop melodies and loud, energetic sounds. They talked about feelings of social alienation in their songs, which connected with many fans around the world. Their third album, In Utero, was released in 1993 and was very well received. Sadly, the band disbanded in 1994 after some difficult times. Even so, Nirvana remains one of the best-selling bands of all time, with over 75 million records sold worldwide. They won many awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

1987–1988: Formation and early years
Singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic met while going to Aberdeen High School in Washington. They became friends and started a band together. After trying a few different names and lineups, they settled on calling their band Nirvana in 1988. They tried out several drummers before finding the right fit.
1988–1990: Early releases
Nirvana released their first single in 1988 and recorded their debut album, Bleach, in 1989. The album became popular on college radio. In 1990, they started working on a new album and tried out different drummers. They eventually found Dave Grohl, who became their permanent drummer.
1991–1992: Nevermind and mainstream breakthrough
Nirvana signed with a major record label and released their second album, Nevermind, in 1991. The album included the hit song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and became very successful. It helped make alternative rock popular and brought Nirvana to worldwide fame.
1993: In Utero

Nirvana's music was mainly described as grunge, alternative rock, and punk rock. It also had elements of hard rock. Their style mixed pop melodies with loud, noisy guitar sounds. Billboard praised their unique combination of Kurt Cobain's voice, loud guitars, Dave Grohl's energetic drumming, and Krist Novoselic's bass playing.
Cobain wanted to blend different musical styles, from heavy rock to pop songs. After listening to the band Pixies, he felt inspired to try new sounds. Nirvana's music often shifted between quiet and loud parts. Cobain wrote the basic parts of songs on an acoustic guitar and usually wrote lyrics just before recording. He liked to mix different ideas and feelings in his words.

Rolling Stone placed them high on their list of the greatest artists ever and praised their lead singer, Kurt Cobain, as one of the best guitarists and singers.
Nirvana’s music was honored in many ways. Their songs and albums were added to important lists by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress. Their famous album Nevermind was called the best album of the 1990s by Time magazine. In 2014, Nirvana was officially added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2023, they received a special Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards.
