North Alabama is a beautiful region in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is part of the Tennessee Valley, which includes nine counties. Some groups also add a few more counties, making the area even bigger.

The biggest city in North Alabama is Huntsville. Other important cities include Decatur, Florence-Muscle Shoals, Albertville, Cullman, Fort Payne, and Scottsboro. Many people live in these places and the areas around them.

The land in North Alabama has rolling hills and deep valleys. One special place is Little River Canyon in DeKalb County, which has very tall cliffs and beautiful views. The Tennessee River flows through this part of Alabama, giving the area its nickname, the "Tennessee Valley".

Climate

North Alabama has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot, humid summers and mild winters. Average high temperatures are around 90 °F in summer and about 49 °F in winter.

Geography

North Alabama is bordered to the north by Middle Tennessee, to the east by northwest Georgia, to the south by Central Alabama and the Birmingham metropolitan area, and to the west by North Mississippi. The entire region is located in the Central Time Zone.

The Tennessee River flows through almost all of North Alabama, entering near Bridgeport and leaving near Waterloo. Many important towns in the area are found in the valley of this river. Large lakes such as Guntersville Lake, Wheeler Lake, and Wilson Lake are created by dams along the river. Other lakes like Weiss Lake and Lewis Smith Lake are also found in the region.

Little River Canyon is a distinct feature of North Alabama’s Cumberland Plateau region.

North Alabama includes several counties such as Cherokee, Colbert, DeKalb, Franklin, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Morgan, and Winston.

The area also has several important cities and smaller towns, including the Huntsville–Decatur-Albertville combined statistical area, the Huntsville metropolitan area, the Decatur metropolitan area, and The Shoals.

Economy

The northern part of Alabama has many different industries, including manufacturing and high-tech companies. The three main cities—Huntsville, Decatur, and Florence—each have their own special kinds of jobs. The whole area also depends a lot on farming, especially growing crops, raising cattle, and raising chickens.

Huntsville is important because it has the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall Spaceflight Center. There is also a big research park nearby with many science and technology companies like Boeing, SAIC, and Dynetics. Huntsville is also where cars are made, with factories from Toyota and a joint Toyota-Mazda factory.

Wilson Dam is a part of the Tennessee Valley Authority's valuable impact on the North Alabama economy.

Decatur, in the middle of the area, is good for shipping and making things because it is on the Tennessee River. It has many big companies such as General Electric, Nucor, and 3M. There are also places where food is processed, like Wayne Farms and Gemstone Foods. United Launch Alliance builds rockets for NASA in Decatur. The Tennessee Valley Authority also started in this area.

In Florence-Muscle Shoals, known as "The Shoals", there are companies that make things like airplane parts and train cars. Many people in The Shoals work in hospitals and schools.

Tourism

North Alabama has many fun places to visit. The most popular spot is the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, where you can learn about space and see amazing rockets. Other great places include Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, and Point Mallard Park.

You can also enjoy Lake Guntersville State Park, Joe Wheeler State Park, the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, and the Little River Canyon National Preserve. Don’t miss the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, and the Cook Museum of Natural Science. The biggest yearly celebration in the area is the W.C. Handy Music Festival.

Education

North Alabama has many colleges and universities. The public universities in the area are Alabama A&M University, Athens State University, the University of North Alabama, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Oakwood University is the largest private university there.

The University of North Alabama is Alabama’s oldest public university.

There are also several two-year colleges, including Calhoun Community College, J.F. Drake State Community & Technical College, Northeast Alabama Community College, Northwest-Shoals Community College, Snead State Community College, and Wallace State Community College.
