North Bačka District

The North Bačka District (Serbian: Севернобачки округ, romanized: Severnobački okrug, pronounced ) is one of the administrative districts of Serbia. It is located in the region known as Bačka. As of the 2022 census, the district is home to 160,163 people. The largest city and administrative center of the North Bačka District is Subotica. This area is part of the rich and historic Pannonian Plain, known for its agriculture and cultural diversity.
History
In the 9th century, the area now known as the North Bačka District was ruled by a Bulgarian-Slavic leader named Salan. From the 11th to the 16th century, it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary and divided into different regions.
Later, during Ottoman rule in the 16th and 17th centuries, the area became part of the Sanjak of Segedin. In the 18th century, under Habsburg control, it was split between the Military Frontier and Batsch County. Over time, these areas were reorganized into various counties and districts.
During the 20th century, the region was part of Yugoslavia, first in Novi Sad County, then Bačka Oblast, and later Danube Banovina. After World War II, it became part of the autonomous Vojvodina within Serbia. The modern administrative districts of Serbia, including the North Bačka District, were established in 1992.

The North Bačka District includes one city and two municipalities. These are:
- Subotica (Hungarian: Szabadka) (city)
- Bačka Topola (Hungarian: Topolya) (municipality)
- Mali Iđoš (Hungarian: Kishegyes) (municipality)
Demographics
The North Bačka District has two main towns. Subotica has 88,752 people, and Bačka Topola has 11,930 people.
In some places, most people speak Hungarian, while in others, most people speak Serbian. This makes the area very interesting and diverse.
