North Berkeley station is an underground train station in the North Berkeley neighborhood of Berkeley, California. It is part of the Bay Area Rapid Transit, often called BART, which helps people travel quickly around the area. The station is in a quiet part of the city near homes, bounded by Virginia Street, Sacramento Street, Delaware Street, and Acton Street.

The main way to get into the station is through a round building in the middle of a parking lot. There is also an elevator that takes people from the parking lot down to where the trains stop. This makes it easier for everyone, including those who use wheelchairs or have trouble with steps.

Trains on the Orange and Red lines stop at North Berkeley station. These lines connect this part of Berkeley to many other places, making it simple for people to visit friends, go to school, or travel around the city. The station helps keep the neighborhood connected and busy.

History

The 2022-installed elevator faregate

This area was once an open space where a streetcar line ran long ago. Later, homes were built there until the streetcar stopped running in 1941. In the 1960s, these homes were removed to build the North Berkeley station. Instead of apartment buildings, a parking lot was created around the station. The station opened for service on January 29, 1973.

In recent years, plans have been made to replace the parking lot with homes close to public transport. This project will include about 750 homes, a place for children to be cared for, shops, bike parking, and public spaces. Construction is not expected to start before mid-2025. In 2022, new ticket checks were added to the elevator at this station.
