History
Soccer in Colorado
Colorado has three other professional soccer teams. The Colorado Rapids play in Major League Soccer, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks play in the USL Championship, and the Colorado Rapids 2 play in the MLS Next Pro.
Inaugural season
Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC began playing in 2022. Their first-ever match was in the U.S. Open Cup on April 6, 2022, where they won 1–0. Their first league goal was scored by Ethan Vanacore-Decker on April 9, 2022. They even beat a big team, Real Salt Lake, in one of their early matches. Their first home game was on June 8, 2022, ending in a 1–1 draw.
2024 USL Jägermeister Cup
In 2024, a new tournament called the USL Jägermeister Cup (or the USL Cup) started for USL League One teams. Northern Colorado did very well, finishing first in their group and winning the tournament by beating Forward Madison in the final.
Ownership troubles
In 2024, the team's owner faced some legal issues, and the team’s franchise agreement was terminated by USL League One. However, the team planned to keep playing. In 2025, they joined The League for Clubs and later confirmed their participation in the 2025 NISA Pro Cup. The head coach left in September 2025, and an assistant coach took over.
Stadium
Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC plays its home games at TicketSmarter Stadium, which is part of the Future Legends Complex. This large area includes space for many sports, with plans for 10 baseball fields and 12 soccer pitches. The team shares this spot with another baseball team called the Northern Colorado Owlz.
Because of delays in building the stadium, the team used Jackson Stadium at the University of Northern Colorado in June 2022. Then, in July 2022, they played at Canvas Stadium at Colorado State University, which is a big football stadium that can hold over 40,000 people.
