Northern Neotropical river otter

The Northern Neotropical river otter (Lontra annectens), once known as Lutra longicaudis annectens, is now recognized as its own special kind of otter. It lives in parts of Central America and northwestern South America. Scientists have learned that this group of otters is quite different from others, so they gave it its own name.

This otter used to be thought of as a part of another otter species called Lutra longicaudis, but new studies show it is really its own species named Lontra annectens. Some groups, like the IUCN, still call it a subspecies, but many scientists agree it should be seen as a separate species.
