Nuuk Airport

Nuuk Airport is the main airport in Greenland's capital city, Nuuk. It is very important for travel in Greenland because it is the main base for Air Greenland, the country's main airline. People from many places can fly to Nuuk, thanks to airlines like Icelandair, SAS, and United Airlines.

The airport was first built in 1979 for special kinds of small planes. Between 2019 and 2024, the airport got a big makeover. They made the runway longer and built a new terminal. Now, bigger airplanes can land there, making travel easier and faster for people going to and from Nuuk. Before this, people often had to change planes at another airport, Kangerlussuaq Airport, which took more time.

Geography

The airport is located a short distance from the center of Nuuk. Some parts of the city have grown closer to the airport over the past ten years. Today, you can walk to the airport from nearby areas, and it is very close to the University of Greenland and an alpine ski course.

History

Seaplane era

In the early 1960s, Nuuk was served by flying boats using the city's waterways as a landing site. A tragic accident happened in 1962 when one of these planes crashed near the port, affecting many people.

Helicopter era

In 1965, a heliport opened in Nuuk, bringing more reliable helicopter services to the city. These helicopters helped connect Nuuk to nearby areas for over a decade.

Regional airport network

Nuuk Airport opened in 1979, part of a plan to build smaller airports across Greenland. The airport started with a short runway and was built on a sloped area near a mountain.

Network expansion

International flights began in the 1980s to places like Canada and Iceland, though these stopped due to cost. Later, more airports were built across Greenland, improving connections.

2000 onwards

For many years, international flights mostly went through Kangerlussuaq Airport. In 2007, Icelandair started flying directly to Nuuk. Air Greenland also added new routes, and charter flights began for special events.

Proposals for expansion

As Nuuk grew, there was a need for better airport connections. The short runway made it hard to welcome larger planes, so plans were made to extend it. There were many challenges, like weather and space, but expanding the airport was important for tourism and travel.

New runway and airport construction

Construction to extend the runway began in 2019. The new runway and terminal opened in late 2024, allowing bigger planes to land and improving travel options for Nuuk.

Rebuilt airport opening

The new, longer runway opened in November 2024. Air Greenland moved its main hub to Nuuk and started new routes to places like Billund and Aalborg. Other airlines also added more flights.

New routes

Air Greenland began new flights in 2025 using larger planes to cities like Billund and Aalborg. Icelandair also added more flights to Reykjavik. In October 2024, United Airlines announced a new flight from Newark to Nuuk, starting in June 2025. Scandinavian Airlines also planned new summer flights from Copenhagen to Nuuk.

Initial operational difficulties

In the first months after opening, Nuuk Airport faced some problems. Security checks were not fully approved at first, and some flights were cancelled due to weather and staffing issues. The airport had to temporarily bring in staff from Denmark to fix security problems. These issues caused some public concern and changes in the airport's management.

Facilities

Nuuk Airport has a passenger terminal and a cargo terminal run by Air Greenland. It is the main base for the airline. The airport uses special tools to help planes land safely.

The terminal has four gates, with separate areas for different travel zones and places to check passports. There are machines for checking in, security checks, a shop without taxes, a café, and places to sit.

Airlines and destinations

Nuuk Airport has many airlines that fly there. Air Greenland, the main airline of Greenland, uses this airport as its home base. Other airlines like Icelandair fly there all year, and SAS and United Airlines come during certain times of the year. These airlines offer flights to and from Nuuk regularly.

Ground transport

The airport is connected to Nuuk by road from two directions: one route goes around the south end of the runway, and the other follows the north end. You can find both short-term and long-term parking for private cars at the terminal. Taxis and tour buses are also available.

Bus

The Nuuk bus system links the airport with Nuuk Centrum using Line 3. This bus passes through the Nuussuaq and Quassussuup Tungaa districts. During rush hours from Monday to Friday, buses leave the airport every hour.
