Oristano has an interesting past. Long ago, it was called Aristiánēs Límnē by the Byzantines and was near an old Phoenician town named Othoca, now called Santa Giusta. In 1070, it became important when Archbishop Torcotorio moved the bishopric there because of attacks, and it became the capital of the Judicate of Arborea.

During medieval times, Oristano was powerful and fought with other kingdoms on the island of Sardinia. Later, it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia under Spanish and then Piedmontese rule. In 1921, some Sardinian veterans founded the Sardinian Action Party in the city.

Culture

Sa Sartiglia and other events

Sartiglia

Sa Sartiglia is a special horse race that has been held in Oristano for over 500 years, on Carnival Sunday and Mardi Gras. On Sunday, the race is organized by farmers, and on Mardi Gras, it is organized by carpenters.

During the race, masked riders on horseback try to catch a small tin star hanging from a ribbon above the street. They ride very fast and use their swords to try to grab the star. The number of stars caught each day is thought to predict how well the harvest and carpentry work will go that year.

After Sa Sartiglia ends, there is another event called La Pariglia. In this event, the same riders perform tricks and stunts on their horses. The leader of both events is called Su Componidori, chosen by the members of the organizations. This leader is neither male nor female and is seen as a symbol of the land. At the end of the tournament, Su Componidori blesses the town with a bunch of flowers wrapped in a ribbon.
