Ouachita orogeny

The Ouachita orogeny was a mountain-building event that changed the shape of the Earth’s surface long ago. During this time, huge layers of rock, called strata, were pushed together, folded, and broken in places called faults. These changes created the beautiful Ouachita Mountains, which we can still see today.

The Ouachita system was much larger than just the mountains we see now. It stretched from Arkansas and Oklahoma all the way to the Black Warrior Basin in Alabama. It even continued far into Texas, forming uplifts like the Llano, Marathon, and Solitario. The rocks from this ancient system also reach into Mexico, specifically through the areas of Coahuila and Chihuahua.

This mountain-building event happened millions of years ago and helps geologists understand how continents move and change over time. Studying the Ouachita orogeny gives us clues about Earth’s history and the powerful forces that shape our planet.

Pre-collision formations

The early Paleozoic saw the region that is now the southern United States lying off the coast of Laurentia, with Laurentia positioned across the equator. To the south of Laurentia lay the Rheic Ocean. Over time, from the Ordovician through the Silurian, Devonian, and into the early Carboniferous, the area collected many layers of marine sediments such as black shale, quartzose sandstone, and chert. Later, during the Mississippian, more sediments called a flysch formed, including dark shales and graywackes. Small amounts of volcanism also occurred, leaving behind bits of silicic tuff, all of which formed above a subduction zone along the southern edge of Laurentia.

Collision

South America moved toward Laurentia as the ocean floor between them slowly sank beneath the surface. When the continents finally bumped into each other, the land pushed up and folded, creating the Ouachita Mountains. Later, during the Pennsylvanian and Permian periods, rivers flowing from these mountains dropped layers of dirt and sand into areas now known as north-central Texas and Oklahoma. Over time, erosion wore down the mountains, and they were covered by newer layers of sediment. Today, we learn about these ancient structures from deep holes dug while searching for oil.
