Oxnard is a city in Ventura County, California, United States, located along California's Central Coast. It is the most populous city in Ventura County and the 22nd-most-populous city in California. Oxnard was officially created, or "incorporated," in 1903 and lies about 60 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

The city sits on the edge of the fertile Oxnard Plain, where many crops such as strawberries and lima beans are grown. Oxnard is also an important place for transportation in Southern California, with many travel services like Amtrak, Union Pacific, Metrolink, Greyhound, and Intercalifornias stopping there. There is also a small airport called Oxnard Airport (OXR).

Oxnard has connections to oil fields like the Oxnard Oil Field and the West Montalvo Oil Field. Because of the many oil, industry, and farming activities nearby, the area has faced some environmental issues. In 2020, Oxnard had a population of 202,063, and many of its residents are Latino. The city is the largest in the Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Oxnard was originally a part of Rancho El Rio de Santa Clara o la Colonia, granted in 1837 by Governor Alvarado to seven retired soldiers from the Presidio of Santa Barbara.

Before Europeans arrived, the area now known as Oxnard was home to the Chumash Native Americans. In 1542, explorer João Rodrigues Cabrilho claimed the land for Spain. During the mission period, Mission San Buenaventura used the area for raising cattle.

American farmers began settling in the area around 1850, growing barley and lima beans. In 1897, Henry T. Oxnard built a large sugar beet factory nearby. The town of Oxnard grew up around this factory and was officially incorporated as a city on June 30, 1903. Over the years, Oxnard expanded with new homes, businesses, and a harbor named Channel Islands Harbor. During World War II, naval bases were established nearby, which helped grow industries such as aerospace and communications.

Geography

Oxnard is found on the Oxnard Plain, a place with rich soil. The area has beaches, dunes, wetlands, creeks, and the Santa Clara River, which helps support many plants and animals. Some native plants in Oxnard include coastal sage scrub and Coastal Dune Scrub, but many have been lost to make space for farms and buildings. One special plant that is in danger of disappearing is the Ventura Marsh Milkvetch, and the last big group of these plants is in Oxnard, even though there is a housing plan nearby.

The Santa Clara River runs between Oxnard and Ventura, and it has smaller rivers that flow into it, like Sespe Creek, Piru Creek, and Castaic Creek. Oxnard sits near the edges of the Earth’s plates, which can cause earthquakes. One such fault line, the Oak Ridge Fault, goes right through Oxnard. This fault was linked to a big earthquake in 1994. Oxnard has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, meaning it has mild, rainy winters and warm, dry summers. The city usually has around 300 sunny days a year and gets about 15 inches of rain each year.

The area around Oxnard is home to many small animals like squirrels, raccoons, and skunks. Coyotes hunt these smaller animals, and birds and smaller animals might become food for stray or pet dogs and cats. Oxnard has several power plants that use ocean water to cool down, and these plants create pollution that affects the air and water. The city has tried to stop more power plants from being built. The land around Oxnard is also used for farming, especially for growing strawberries, which need chemicals that can also harm the environment. Old houses in Oxnard show many different styles of building, like Victorian and Carpenter Gothic. The city has areas for homes, businesses, and industries, and its tallest buildings are in the northern part of the city. Near the coast, Ormond Beach is a popular spot for watching birds, though much of its natural wetlands has been changed by farming and industry.

Agriculture

Strawberries

Strawberry field

The Oxnard Plain is well known for its strawberries. Oxnard is California's largest strawberry producer, supplying about one-third of the state's annual strawberry volume. From the end of September through the end of October, strawberries are planted and harvesting occurs from mid-December through mid-July in Oxnard. The peak harvesting season in California runs from April through June when up to 10 million pint baskets of strawberries are shipped daily. California supplies over 85 percent of U.S. strawberries, and the U.S. supplies a quarter of the world's strawberry production.

The annual California Strawberry Festival features vendors and food items based on the fruit such as strawberry nachos, strawberry pizza, strawberry funnel cake, strawberry sundaes, and strawberry champagne.

Pests that attack this crop can be economically harmful in this town. Much research and effort is focused here and in Watsonville and Salinas.

Cannabis

Further information: Cannabis in California

In 2018, 80% of voters approved a cannabis tax. The city council took a careful approach when recreational cannabis became legal in California. Companies must be licensed by the local agency and the state to grow, test, or sell cannabis and the city may allow none or only some of these activities. After an initial ban, businesses focusing on manufacturing, testing, and distributing cannabis were allowed to apply for a permit to operate in July 2019. An initial process in May 2020 to select retail proposals was challenged by unsuccessful applicants. After revising the city ordinance, the council decided in September 2020 to allow ten retail licenses to be issued. The city requires dispensaries to be at least 600 feet from schools or daycare centers. A special-use permit was approved for a retail store in an Oxnard Shores neighborhood shopping center in February 2022. The first dispensary in the city opened in the downtown area in December 2022.
