Pinctada maxima is a species of pearl oyster, a marine bivalve mollusk in the family Pteriidae. These oysters come in two color varieties: the Gold-lipped oyster and the Silver-lipped oyster. They are the largest pearl oysters in the world and have a very strong inner shell layer made of nacre, also called "mother of pearl."

These oysters are very important for making cultured pearls. They are specially raised to produce South Sea pearls, which are famous for their beauty and size. In 1996, the South Sea pearl was named the national gem of the Philippines by President Fidel Ramos. You can even see the oyster and pearl on the back of the Philippine New Generation Currency Series 1,000-peso bill.

Description

Internal and external appearance of shell

Pinctada maxima oysters can grow very large, reaching up to 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter. There are two types of these oysters, one with gold-colored edges and the other with silver-colored edges. The color of the pearls they make depends on the color of the oyster's inner shell. Factors like water temperature, tiny plants in the water, and particles in the water decide which type of oyster is more common in different places.

Pearl farming (Perliculture)

Pinctada maxima creates beautiful South Sea pearls that can be white, silver, champagne, or gold. Another type of pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, makes what are often called Tahitian pearls, which can be gray, platinum, charcoal, aubergine, or peacock-colored. These pearls are mainly farmed in Australia, Indonesia, Tahiti, and the Philippines. Because these oysters are large, they can use a bigger nucleus when growing pearls.

In Australia, pearl farming is mostly done near the town of Broome in Western Australia. These pearls are known for their white or silver color with pink hints and can grow bigger than 18mm to 20mm across, though most are about 10mm to 13mm when collected after two years. The Tahitian or black pearl comes from oysters in the waters around Tahiti and French Polynesia.

Culinary use

Pearl meat comes from the Pinctada maxima pearl oyster and is known for being a special and rare food. It is sweet and firm, tasting a bit like a mix between calamari and lobster, depending on how it is cooked. People in Asia have valued it for many years not just as food but also for its health benefits. Pearl meat is a good source of Omega 3 and has lots of protein with no bad fats. It also includes important nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium, iron, zinc, and iodine.
