Port of Brisbane
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Port of Brisbane is the main shipping port in the city of Brisbane, located on the east coast of Queensland, Australia. It is an important place for moving goods in and out of the country by sea.
As a coastal suburb of the City of Brisbane, the Port of Brisbane plays a big role in the local economy and helps connect Australia to the world through trade. Many ships stop here to load and unload cargo, making it a busy and lively area.
Geography
The Port of Brisbane is found on Fisherman Island, a man-made island in the lower part of the Brisbane River. This island was created from a group of smaller islands near the river’s mouth, close to Brisbane Airport. It is the third busiest port in Australia and is growing quickly as a place for shipping containers. The main shipping route into the port goes across Moreton Bay, stretching 90 kilometres north to Mooloolaba, and is kept deep enough for ships by regular cleaning.
Other big ports in Queensland include the Port of Gladstone and the Port of Townsville. Most of the coal moved through the Port of Brisbane comes from the New Acland Mine.
History
In 1980, a train line called the Fisherman Islands line began operating between the port and a spot near Lindum on the Cleveland line. Later, in 1997, this line was changed to work with two different track sizes as part of a big plan by the Keating Government.
In 2008, the Port of Brisbane Corporation made a deal with Brisbane Container Terminals to use some of its spots for 42 years. Sometimes, dirt and sand build up in the port, which can make it hard to bring in cargo like oil. This happened in 2011, 2013, and 2014, and a lot of money is spent every year to clear it out.
Demographics
In the 2016 census and 2021 census, Port of Brisbane had almost no people living there. It is mostly a place for ships and boats instead of homes.
Facilities
The Port of Brisbane is managed by the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd under a 99-year lease from the Queensland Government. It has 29 places where ships can stop, including nine deep-water spots for big container ships and three for bulk cargo, plus 17 other spots for different types of cargo. Each year, more than 2,600 ships use the port, moving over 28 million tonnes of goods.
Portside Wharf at Hamilton finished in 2006 and is a great place for cruise ships, with restaurants, coffee shops, and gift shops. But because of height limits on the Gateway Bridge, really big cruise ships must stop further down the river at the Multi User Terminal. On 2 June 2022, the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal opened in Pinkenba across from the port. This terminal can welcome the largest cruise ships in the world and is run by the port but is not part of the Port of Brisbane area.
The port also has a place for visitors and a special spot built in 2005 for migratory shorebirds, the biggest such site on the east coast of Australia.
Transport links
The Port of Brisbane Motorway is a short road that connects the Gateway Motorway to the Port of Brisbane. Most goods come to the port in big trucks, with only a small amount arriving by train.
