A stunning view of Earth from space, captured by astronauts on the Apollo 17 mission.

The Pragian was one of three important time periods during the Early Devonian Epoch, which happened a very long time ago. It lasted from about 413 million years ago to about 411 million years ago. Before the Pragian came the Lochkovian Stage, and after it came the Emsian Stage.

One of the most important places to learn about life from this time is the Rhynie chert in Scotland. This place has well-preserved fossils that help scientists understand what the world was like back then. The Pragian gets its name from the city of Prague.

In North America, this same time period is sometimes called Siegenian or Deerparkian.

Pragian life

During the Pragian stage, an important group of sea creatures called ammonoids first appeared. These ammonoids belonged to a group known as the Agoniatitida. They evolved from earlier sea creatures called bactritoid nautiloid ancestors. These ancestors showed up earlier in the same stage and then grew and changed a lot in the following stage.
