The Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC) is a large and important church group in Cameroon. It follows Reformed and Presbyterian traditions and is the biggest church for English speakers in the country. The PCC is part of big worldwide groups like the World Communion of Reformed Churches and the World Council of Churches.
Besides helping people with their faith, the PCC also works to give health and education services to communities. The church started when the Basel Mission began working in Cameroon in 1886. This happened after Cameroon came under the protection of Germany, and the Basel Mission took over from English Baptists. The PCC became fully independent in 1957.
History
The Basel Mission helped start churches in Cameroon in the 1800s. They set up places for people to learn and worship in Southern Cameroon and in towns like Batanga and Yaoundé. They translated the Bible into the local Bulu language.
When World War I started, the country was controlled by Britain, and some missionaries had to leave. But local people kept the church going. After the war, more missionaries came back. World War II also caused problems, but afterward the church grew quickly. In 1957, the church became fully independent with 69,000 members. Today, it is the largest English-speaking church in Cameroon, with about one million members and its main office in Buea. It has 27 areas called Presbyteries where it works.
