Prokhladny, Kabardino-Balkarian Republic

Prokhladny is a town in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic in Russia. It sits near the Malka River, about 60 kilometers north of the city of Nalchik. The town has had many people living there over the years; in 2010, about 59,601 people called Prokhladny home. Before that, in 2002, the number was a bit higher at 61,772, and even earlier in 1989, during a different time in history, there were around 57,084 people living there.
History
The town of Prokhladny was founded in 1765 by the Zaporozhian Cossacks. It has grown over the years into an important place in the region.
Administrative and municipal status
Prokhladny is an important town in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. It serves as the administrative center of the Prokhladnensky District, although it is not part of that district. Instead, it is a separate area known as the town of republic significance of Prokhladny. This gives it the same importance as one of the districts. In terms of local government, the town is organized as Prokhladny Urban Okrug.
Demographics
In 2002, the people living in Prokhladny included many different groups. Most were Russians, making up 79.1% of the population. Other groups included Koreans at 3.3%, Kabardians at 3.1%, Ukrainians at 2.5%, Turks at 1.8%, and Germans at 1.5%.
Notable people
One famous person from Prokhladny is Mariya Lasitskene. She is an Olympic champion and has won three world championships in the high jump.
Transportation
Prokhladny has a large railway station that helps people travel in and out of the town.
