Protomonaxonida

Protomonaxonida is an ancient group of creatures that lived long ago. They were a special kind of sea sponge, which means they lived underwater and were part of the sponge family. These sponges are some of the oldest known sponges ever found.
Scientists discovered these sponges in a place called the Burgess Shale. The Burgess Shale is a famous rock formation where many ancient fossils were preserved. It helps us learn about life from a very long time ago.
Protomonaxonida is considered a paraphyletic group. This means it includes the earliest members of the sponge family but not all of their later relatives. Studying these sponges helps scientists understand how life in the ocean developed millions of years ago.
Families and genera
Protomonaxonida includes many ancient families and genera of sea sponges. Some of these families are Choiidae, Halichondritidae, Hamptoniidae, Hazeliidae, Leptomitidae, Piraniidae, Takakkawiidae, Ulospongiellidae, and Wapkiidae, each with several unique genera.
Additionally, families from the order Hadromerida, such as Sollasellidae and Tethyidae, are sometimes also included in Protomonaxonida. These groups help scientists understand the early evolution of sea sponges.
