Laos is a country in Southeast Asia that is divided into 17 provinces and 1 special area for its capital city, Vientiane. Each province has its own government that helps manage local affairs and services for the people living there. The name for a province in Lao is "ແຂວງ" (khwaeng), and Vientiane, the capital, is treated a little differently as a special municipality.
One special area, called Xaisomboun, was created in 1994, but it was later dissolved in 2006. Today, the 17 provinces and Vientiane help organize and support the people, communities, and resources across the whole country of Laos.
