Public services in Toronto
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Public services in Toronto are the many helpful programs and tools that keep the city running smoothly. These services are paid for by people who own homes in Toronto, money sent from the Government of Ontario and Government of Canada, or by the government groups that take care of bigger areas.
The money for these services is decided each year when the Toronto City Council votes on a plan called an operating budget. This budget helps decide how money is spent to make sure Toronto has things like clean streets, safe parks, good public transport, and many other important services for everyone who lives there or visits.
Operational finances
The city of Toronto gets money for its services from different places. It receives money from the government of Ontario and the government of Canada, charges people for some services, and uses money saved in a special fund. The biggest source of money is property taxes, which make up 42% of the budget.
The city spends most of its money on important services like police, fire, and transit. Other big expenses include social services, housing support, parks, and waste management. Each of these services takes up a portion of the city’s budget.
