Pumbedita

Pumbedita was an ancient city located in what we now call Iraq. Its name in an old language called Jewish Babylonian Aramaic was פוּם בְּדִיתָא, which means "Mouth of the Bedita." This city is especially important because it was home to a famous school called the Pumbedita Academy. This academy was a key place for learning and studying many years ago, helping to keep important knowledge alive.

History

The city of Pumbedita had a Jewish community since the time of the Second Temple of Jerusalem. It was well-known for its Pumbedita Academy, which worked alongside the city of Sura to help create the Babylonian Talmud. The academy was started by Judah ben Ezekiel in the late third century, after the academy in Nehardea was destroyed during the Persian–Palmyrian war.

Different people have suggested various locations for Pumbedita. Some thought it might be near Fallujah, while others linked it to places near Al-Anbar. However, exact details about its location are still being studied by scholars.
