Punjabi culture

Punjabi culture grew out of the settlements along the five rivers. The name Punjab comes from two Persian words: Panj meaning "Five" and Âb meaning "Water". These rivers made the land very important as a route to the Near East as early as the ancient Indus Valley civilization, dating back to 3000 BCE.

Agriculture has always been very important in Punjab and shaped the culture there. In the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, the Green Revolution helped the Punjab become known as the "breadbasket of both India and Pakistan". People in Punjab were often judged by how much land they owned.

Because the Punjab lies on a main route for invasions, it has seen many battles over the centuries. This history helped create a strong sense of honor, called izzat, which is very important to people from Punjab.

Music

Bhangra is a popular style of music from Punjab that many people around the world enjoy today. Musicians in other countries often mix Punjabi music with their own styles to create new and exciting songs. Other important types of music from Punjab include Sufi music and Qawali, especially in Pakistani Punjab.

Punjabi music changed a lot in the 20th century when it began to mix with Western styles like pop, rock, and hip-hop. This created a new kind of Punjabi music that combines modern sounds with traditional instruments and melodies. Gurdas Maan was one of the first artists to help shape this new style in the 1980s with songs like "Challa" and "Mamla Gadbad Hai." His music often talked about important issues such as poverty and fairness.

One modern artist making big steps for Punjabi music is Diljit Dosanjh. In recent years, he has brought Punjabi culture to the world stage. In 2022, his album 'Moonchild Era' was shown on a big billboard in Times Square, New York. In 2023, he became the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella, wearing traditional clothes. In 2024, he appeared on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,' and in 2025, he walked the Met Gala, representing Punjab’s rich history with a special outfit. Diljit has also worked with famous international artists and continues to share Punjabi music with the world.

Over time, bhangra has become popular for many celebrations, not just harvests. It is usually done in a circle with special dance steps. Another famous dance is Giddha, which is performed by women and has been around for thousands of years. It celebrates feminine beauty and grace.

Art

Painting in the Punjab began during the rule of Iltutmish from the Khilji dynasty, who supported artists. Sikh art, including Sikh painting, comes from Punjab's rich art traditions. Experts say Punjabi painting started in the 1500s and was later influenced by Mughal styles in the early 1700s. Early Punjabi Sikh art mostly included wall paintings for religious places until the 1800s.

From about 1810 to 1830, Sikh leaders asked artists from the Punjab Hills to paint pictures of Sikh leaders and important people. After 1830, as Sikhs met more Europeans, European styles began to shape Punjabi art. This mix created what is called Company paintings, where local and European styles combined. Artists in places like Lahore and Amritsar started using watercolour instead of the traditional gouache.

Wall paintings

Murals, including frescoes, are very important in Punjab. These wall paintings show many different topics that everyone could understand, unlike smaller paintings that were often for special people only.

Religious-themed murals are often found in Hindu and Sikh temples. They show scenes from stories like the Mahabharata, such as the story of Draupadi. Other murals show moments from the Bhagavata Purana, like Radha with young women called gopis, or Krishna playing his flute.

The Punjabi language is spoken by about 130 million people. In India, it is written with the Gurmukhi alphabet, while in Pakistan, it uses the Shahmukhi alphabet.

Punjabi literature has a rich history. It began with writings from the Nath Yogi era between the 9th and 14th centuries. A key figure in Punjabi literary tradition is Fariduddin Ganjshakar, who lived from 1173 to 1266. From the 12th to the 19th century, many poets shared beautiful Sufi poetry. Unlike Persian poets who often used a form called the ghazal, Punjabi poets preferred the Kafi.

Punjabi Sufi poetry also inspired other literary traditions, especially stories known as the Punjabi Qissa. These are romantic tales that mix influences from Indian, Persian, and Quranic sources. One of the most famous is the story of Heer Ranjha by Waris Shah, who lived from 1706 to 1798. Other well-known stories include Sohni Mahiwal by Fazal Shah, Mirza Sahiba by Hafiz Barkhudar, Sassi Punnun by Hashim Shah, and Puran Bhagat by Qadaryar.

A Dastar is a special type of headwear linked to Sikhism and is very important in Punjabi and Sikh culture. For Sikhs, the dastār is a symbol of fairness, respect, bravery, and faith. Sikh men and women who follow the Five Ks wear the turban to cover their long hair (kesh). The dastār is a key part of Sikh identity. It became a tradition after the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, created the Khalsa and gave five important symbols of faith, one of which is keeping hair uncut, covered by the dastār.

A Punjabi suit has two pieces: a qameez (top) and salwar (bottom). This is the traditional clothing of the Punjabi people. Shalwars are special trousers that are wide at the waist and narrow at the bottom. They are held up by a drawstring or elastic belt. The kameez is a long shirt or tunic with open sides below the waist for easier movement. The shalwar-kameez is widely worn and is the national dress of Pakistan. When women wear it, they often also wear a long scarf called a dupatta around their head or neck for modesty. This scarf is used by many women in South Asia, and modern versions of the outfit have changed over time.

Habitational culture

Punjabi villages, called pinds, are social groups arranged in special ways. One way to divide a village is into sections called pattis, which are groups of houses around a street known as a gali or bihi. These pattis are often named after the family or group that lives there. Sometimes, a patti is split into smaller parts called thulas or als.

Another way to divide a village is by areas called vehra or yards. These can sometimes be linked to specific families or groups. These divisions help connect families and clans together in the village.

Preservation of Punjabi culture

In recent years, people have worked hard to keep Punjabi culture alive. A great example is the Panjab Digital Library (PDL), started by Davinder Pal Singh. The PDL aims to save old books, papers, and other items that tell the story of the Punjabi language, history, and traditions. This helps make sure that Punjabi culture is protected and can be shared with everyone for years to come.
