The Quirinal Palace (Italian: Palazzo del Quirinale) is a historic building in Rome, Italy, and serves as the main official residence of the president of the Italian Republic, along with Villa Rosebery in Naples and another estate near Rome. It is located on the Quirinal Hill, the highest of the seven hills of Rome.

Over time, the Quirinal Palace has been an important home for many leaders. It was once used by thirty popes, four kings of Italy, and twelve presidents of the Italian Republic.

Originally built by Pope Gregory XIII, the palace was later chosen by Napoleon to be his main residence as emperor. However, Napoleon never actually lived there because of events in Europe in 1814.

Today, the Quirinal Palace covers a huge area of 110,500 square metres (1,189,000 sq ft), making it the eleventh-largest palace in the world. It remains a significant symbol of Italian history and leadership.

History

The Quirinal Palace has a long and interesting history. People have used the land since ancient Roman times. The hill was important because it was the highest in Rome, and many important Romans built homes there.

The palace we see today was built in 1583 by Pope Gregory XIII. He wanted a place to stay that was far from the unhealthy air near the River Tiber. He chose the Quirinal hill and used an existing small villa to build the palace. After the Pope passed away, work slowed, but other popes continued to work on it.

Later, the palace became very important. It was used for special meetings to choose new popes and housed important offices. After Rome became the capital of Italy in 1871, the palace became the home for the kings of Italy and later, the presidents of Italy. Even today, it remains the main official home for Italy's president. The palace also has beautiful gardens and artwork inside.

  • The Great Hall of the Cuirassiers, where important guests are welcomed.
  • The Pauline Chapel, a large chapel used for concerts and ceremonies.
  • The Yellow Room, with walls covered in yellow fabric.
  • The Ambassadors Room, where leaders meet before events.

Gardens

The Mirrors Hall

The Quirinal Gardens are famous for their special location high above Rome. Over time, the gardens have been changed to suit different tastes. Today, they mix a formal garden from the 1600s with a more natural garden from the 1700s. During World War II, the gardens were a place where many children found help.

The gardens also have a special water organ built in the late 1990s. It uses a waterfall to create music. The gardens cover about 4 hectares (10 acres). Under the gardens, there are old ruins from a temple and ancient buildings.
